Franz Lang (born November 14, 1958 in Eben im Pongau ) is director of the Austrian Federal Criminal Police Office and executive director general for public security .

Life

Lang passed his Matura in 1977 and then completed his basic military service in the armed forces. This was followed by deployments abroad with the army in the Middle East and East Africa. He initially opted for an academic career and began studying law. However, he subsequently broke off this and, like his father, entered the service of the gendarmerie . The basic training began in 1979. After several years of service as a classified civil servant, he completed the senior civil servant course in 1987 ("officer course"). In 1989 he was assigned to the Hallein District Gendarmerie Command. In 1994 he was promoted to deputy head of the criminal department of the State Gendarmerie Command for Salzburg , of which he became head in 2000.

Lang became known to the general public as the coordinator and head of the investigation in the case of the fire disaster on the Kaprun glacier railway on November 11, 2000, with 155 dead. It was through this event that the then Interior Minister Ernst Strasser became aware of Lang, who in 2003 appointed him head of "team04". This body of the Ministry of the Interior was responsible for the implementation of the amalgamation of the Federal Gendarmerie, the Federal Security Guard Corps and the Criminal Police Corps, which culminated in the merger of the guards in July 2005. In the same year Lang was appointed deputy head of the General Directorate for Public Security by Interior Minister Liese Prokop .

At the beginning of 2008 it was announced that Lang will succeed the longstanding head of the Federal Criminal Police Office, Herwig Haidinger . His contract had not been extended as usual. As a result, there were allegations of Haidinger against high officials and politicians of the Interior Ministry, which resulted in a parliamentary committee of inquiry.

On July 1, 2008, the day Lang was supposed to take up his post as BK director, he was appointed head of cabinet by the new Interior Minister Maria Fekter, who was sworn in on the same day . The BK was managed by its deputy head Andrea Raninger until December 2008.

In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic in Austria , he heads the crisis team. On April 1, 2020, Gerhard Lang succeeded Michael Fischer as interim head of the Federal Criminal Police Office.
