Franz List (mechanical engineer)

Franz List (born October 13, 1878 in Vienna ; † August 5, 1946 Mondsee , Upper Austria ) was an Austrian mechanical engineer and university professor . He was rector of the Vienna University of Technology .

Life

Franz List studied mechanical engineering at the Vienna University of Technology, where he passed the second state examination in 1902 and then became Leopold von Hauffe's assistant . From 1903 to 1908 he was a designer for lifting machines for Witkowitzer Eisenwerke .

In 1908 he returned to the Technical University of Vienna, where he worked as a design engineer for Karl Kobes at the chair for theoretical engineering and construction of lifting machines. From the academic year 1909/10 he was a supplement to the chair for machine drawing, from 1910/11 he taught in the subject of lifting machines. In 1914 he was appointed associate professor, and in 1920 full professor for machine drawing and construction of lifting machines.

In 1924 he laid the foundation stone for the mechanical engineering laboratory on Getreidemarkt , which was expanded from 1926 to 1929 , by securing the former kuk war school for the Vienna University of Technology. As head of the lifting machine laboratory, he carried out tests on gears, brakes and wire ropes. In the academic years 1926/27 to 1928/29 he was the dean of the mechanical engineering school, in the academic year 1935/36 he was elected rector of the Vienna University of Technology . During his rectorate, compulsory lectures on the historical and ideal foundations of Austria as well as mandatory university camps were held for the first time during the summer holidays. In 1945/46 he was Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

List was active in several standards committees, among other things, with his participation, standards in the field of machine drawing were created, and he also made contributions to the Austrian elevator standard. He died in 1946 at the age of 67.
