Franz Mayr , since 1859 Mayr von Melnhof , since 1872 Baron Mayr von Melnhof (Franz II. Or the elder , born August 23, 1810 in Leoben ; † December 28, 1889 ibid) was an Austrian industrialist.

Life

He was the son of the Leoben innkeeper and industrial pioneer Franz Mayr . After studying at the Schemnitz Mining Academy , he worked for ten years in the English coal and steel industry, where he acquired extensive specialist knowledge in the iron industry. In 1840 he joined his father's business and introduced the English puddling process instead of freshening . In 1845/46 he expanded the business in Donawitz with the construction of the Karolihütte and in 1852 with the Theodorahütte . In 1859 he was ennobled with the title "von Melnhof" and in 1872 he was raised to the rank of baron . In 1872 he sold the entire Mayr'schen Eisenwerke in Donawitz, in good time before the price collapse of the start-up crisis , to the Innerberg main union , which nine years later, in 1881, joined the Austrian-Alpine Montangesellschaft , which was founded at the time .

Baron Mayr von Melnhof also built a cast steel factory in Kapfenberg , which was sold to the Böhler brothers in 1894 . In 1874 he founded the Steirische Montanwerke . In his era, a large part of the extensive forest property that still belongs to the Mayr-Melnhof family was acquired. His successor as company manager was his son Franz III.
