Franz Pfeiffer (physicist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Pfeiffer (born November 25, 1972 in Kösching ) is a German physicist and university professor . His key scientific achievements include the development of X-ray-based phase contrast and dark field imaging and its development for medical applications.

Career

Pfeiffer studied physics from 1993 to 1999 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. After research and teaching stays in France ( ESRF & ILL Grenoble), the United States ( APS Argonne), Switzerland ( PSI Villigen), he was appointed to the chair for Biomedical Physics at the Technical University of Munich in 2009 and has been the director of the interdisciplinary since 2017 Munich School of BioEngineering (MSB) .

research

The modalities of phase contrast and dark field known from light microscopy were significantly expanded by Pfeiffer to include X-ray imaging. In 2006 he developed an interferometer-based imaging method for use with conventional X-ray sources , which was previously only possible with synchrotron sources . The process thus gained potential for broad medical application as well as for non-destructive material testing . Furthermore, Pfeiffer introduced the modality of the X-ray dark field , which can be extracted from interferometric measurements and, in particular, depicts structures with high contrast that strongly scatter X-rays; this is the case for the lung tissue, for example. As a result, numerous medical fields of application up to the first preclinical studies were developed.

Pfeiffer is also known for the development of X-ray-based ptychography and tensor tomography methods as well as grid interferometric imaging with neutrons . His research spectrum also includes iterative reconstruction algorithms for computed tomography , dual-energy CT, the development of X-ray contrast media and high-resolution micro- and nanotomography.

Pfeiffer is the author of over 250 scientific publications and the inventor of numerous patents.
