Franz Popp (politician)

Franz Popp (born September 14, 1891 in Dobermannsdorf ; † September 8, 1981 in Vienna ) was an Austrian teacher and SDAP politician . From 1945 to 1960 Popp was Deputy Governor in the Lower Austrian provincial government .

education and profession

Franz Popp attended elementary school in Hohenau and the citizen school in Zistersdorf . Popp then graduated from the teacher training institute in Wiener Neustadt and completed his Matura. Popp subsequently entered the school service and completed military service between 1914 and 1918, where he achieved the rank of first lieutenant. Popp worked as a primary school teacher in Leobersdorf , Berndorf , Pottenstein , Weissenbach an der Triesting , Gainfarn , Günselsdorf , Traiskirchen and ultimately in Hohenau, where he took over the post of primary school director in 1947.

politics

From 1923 Popp was a member of the Free Teachers Union of Austria and held the office of Mayor of Hohenau from 1921 to 1934. During Popp's tenure as mayor, Hohenau grew strongly, with 200 new houses, a power station and the town hall being built. In addition, Popp was a member of the Lower Austrian state parliament between May 11, 1921 and February 16, 1934. After the February fighting in the Austrian Civil War and the ban on the Social Democratic Workers' Party in Austria, he lost his political functions and was imprisoned from February and April 1934. After his discharge from teaching, Popp worked as an insurance agent and was under police supervision from 1934 to 1938. From 1938 to 1939, a Gestapo investigation was initiated against him.

After the end of the Second World War, Popp joined the Socialist Teachers' Association of Austria in 1945 and became a member of the provisional state committee in May 1945. In addition, Popp held the office of central secretary of the SPÖ. Within the party, Popp also held the office of state party chairman from 1956 to 1960. He was again a member of the state parliament from December 12, 1945 to February 16, 1960, and during this time he was also the SPÖ club chairman. He also held the post of Deputy Governor from December 12, 1945 to October 4, 1960. Popp was responsible for school and cultural administration in the state government and played a key role in establishing the school building fund.
