Franz Richter ( April 1, 1928 - October 16, 2019 ) was a German football player who was active in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of GDR football, in the 1950s .

Athletic career

At the age of 22, Franz Richter played his first game in the GDR league on October 29, 1950 for the company sports association (BSG) Rotation Dresden . In the encounter between BSG Lokomotive Stendal and BSG Rotation, he was called up by coach Kurt Böhme as a center forward instead of the previous 37-year-old striker Kurt Forke . As a central striker, Richter also played the following eight league games during the winter break. After that, however, it was no longer used. From the 1951/52 season Richter played for the newcomer SV Vorwärts Leipzig . For the team of the GDR Interior Ministry, Richter played ten games of the first eleven point games, in which he mainly used in midfield. After that, he was only called up in the last seven league matches both in defense and again in midfield. In 1952/53 Richter only played for forward in the first half of the season. After three games as a midfielder at the start of the season, he came back to the team as a half-left striker from the eighth to the eleventh round. On the tenth game day he scored his only point goal for the Leipzig team in the encounter Vorwärts Leipzig - activist Brieske-Ost . For the second half of the season, the team was completely rebuilt with several new players, and Richter was no longer considered. The team was relocated to East Berlin during the current season and was relegated at the end of the season. In the GDR league season 1953/54 Richter played only one point game for forward Berlin, with which he contributed only minimally to the promotion. For the 1954/55 season Richter returned to Leipzig, where he joined the upper division BSG Einheit Ost . He only came to his first appearance after ten match days. Immediately thereafter, the soccer section of the BSG was taken over by the newly founded SC Rotation Leipzig , along with Franz Richter. This was used in a total of nine league games by the end of the season. In his penultimate game, he scored the second and last goal of his league career at 1-1 in the encounter between Chemistry Karl-Marx-Stadt and SC Rotation. Then, at the age of 27, Franz Richter said goodbye to high-class football.
