Franz Schmithüsen

Franz Schmithüsen (born January 3, 1940 in Oberkassel ; † April 14, 2015 ) was a German forest scientist .

Life

Franz Schmithüsen, son of the geographer Josef Schmithüsen and his wife Franziska, attended elementary schools in Pforzheim and Karlsruhe from 1946 to 1950 and later switched to the Kantgymnasium in Karlsruhe. There he passed his school leaving examination in 1959. From 1959 to 1964 he studied forestry and economics at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich . In 1961 he passed the preliminary forestry examination at the University of Freiburg. From 1964 to 1969 he was a PhD student at the ETH Zurich , where he received his doctorate with a thesis on the rights of use of forest resources in 1969 Dr. sc. techn. has been. He had already passed the state forestry examination in Baden-Württemberg. In 1970 the final exam took place at the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences . In 1975 he completed his habilitation under Gerhard Speidel at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg in the fields of forest economics and policy .

Schmithüsen entered the civil service in Baden-Württemberg and was a forest trainee (1967), forest assessor (1969), forest officer (1971), chief forest officer (1972). From 1978 to 1981 he was head of the Geislingen Forestry Office . In 1981 he was appointed Forest Director and Personnel Officer at the Stuttgart Forest Directorate .

Since 1970 Schmithüsen has worked repeatedly for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome . In 1972 he worked on behalf of the World Bank with the support of the State Forestry Administration of Baden-Württemberg on the Ivory Coast, in 1980 in Bolivia and between 1981 and 1984 in Bangladesh and Peru.

In 1984 Schmithüsen was appointed full professor for forest policy and forest economics at the ETH Zurich. At the same time, he was appointed adjunct professor at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg. He was head of the Institute for Forest and Wood Research and the Department for Forest and Wood Research at the ETHZ as well as the ETH President's delegate for professorships. In 2005 he retired.

Schmithüsen was a member of the Catholic student associations KDStV Hercynia Freiburg im Breisgau in the CV and later the AV Turicia Zurich in the Swiss student association since 1959 .

Act

Franz Schmithüsen was committed to a secret view of forestry with the social and natural sciences. He has written numerous scientific papers on the topics of forest and landscape in a social context as well as on the professionalization and optimization of the management of the forest resource. He was involved in numerous organizations and committees and integrated into an international network for global forestry and forest policy.
