Franz Sedlacek began playing soccer in the youth team at AC Viktoria Wien , from where he moved to AC Vienna . Since he was the youngest player on his team there, he was nicknamed Benjamin , which he kept for most of his playing career. In the summer of 1910 there were serious differences between the players and the club management during a tour abroad, which eventually led to the resignation of a number of players. In addition to established players such as Adolf Fischera , Richard Kohn or the brothers Karl and Felix Tekusch , Sedlacek was also one of those who left who subsequently founded the Wiener AF . The club was divided into the first division and took part in the championship, which was held for the first time in 1911.

After Sedlacek was still a substitute player in the first championship season , he was able to conquer a regular place as a right halfback from the 1912/13 season and ended this season as runner-up with the WAF. He was described as a player with a high understanding of the game, solid ball technique and good physical disposition, who was one of the first in Viennese football to recognize that one should also get involved in the structure of the game as a side runner. In the following season, the Hütteldorfer even managed to surpass the previous year's success and on the basis of the better win-defeat ratio to get the championship title in front of SK Rapid Wien with equal points . In the following seasons, too, the Reds were able to position themselves among the top four clubs in Vienna, but they did not win another championship title.

In May 1919 Sedlacek suffered a serious knee injury, which largely ended his career. He made comeback attempts at the WAF and from January 1920 at the WAC, where he came to his last missions in the relegation season 1920/21 before he ended his active career.

National team

He played eleven international matches for the senior national team . He made his debut on June 15, 1913 in Vienna in a 2-0 victory over the Italian national team as the right side runner in a run next to Rapidler Josef Brandstätter and his WAF colleague Karl Tekusch. From 1915 to 1918 ten games followed exclusively against the Hungarian national team due to the war , three of which were won and five were lost; a comparison ended in a draw and a game had to be abandoned when the score was 3: 3. Sedlacek's last appearance was in a 2-0 draw against Hungary on June 2, 1918 in Vienna.

Coaching career

After his active playing career Sedlacek hit the coaching career. He started his first job in April 1922 at MTV Pirmasens . In early 1923 he moved to Italy and took over the coaching post at Vicenza Calcio . He then looked after Padua and from October 1924 to 1926 AC Venice before he returned to Vienna and worked for FK Austria Wien from December 1926 . In the 1927/28 season Sedlacek was again active in Italy, this time for Lazio Rome .

In February 1929 he took over the coaching post at the Polish first division promoted Garbarnia Kraków with which he immediately reached the runner-up behind Warta Posen . In the following season it was only enough for sixth place. After the two years in Krakow, Sedlacek was temporarily active in several Upper Silesian clubs, rather he signed with the Karlsruhe FV in mid-1931 , with which he became Baden champion in 1932. In 1933 the coach returned to his hometown where he signed a contract with his former club WAC. On the day of the planned first training session with the Prater team, Sedlacek died of a stroke at the age of 40.
