Franz Skaupy

Franz Skaupy (born June 20, 1882 in Vienna ; † August 24, 1969 in Berlin ) was an Austrian physicist and inventor as well as a university professor in Germany. The Skaupy Prize initiated by the Powder Metallurgy Association is named after him.

Franz Skaupy developed a. a. the first Vitalux lamp, an incandescent lamp with UV-transmitting glass bulb as a mild Dorno emitters (UV-B).

Life

After attending the local high school and studying at the university there, Franz Skaupy was awarded a Dr. Phil. And joined the Auer Society in Berlin at the suggestion of Rudolf Wegscheider .

Franz Skaupy was appointed to the board of OSRAM GmbH KG from 1922 to 1928 during his managerial work from 1907 and later as head of the study society for electric fluorescent tubes until 1928, which arose from the merger of several lamp manufacturers in 1919 . He was supported in his developments and a. by Marcello Pirani and Karl Schröter (* 1885).

From 1928, following the call of Walter Nernst , he taught at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin in the subject of technical physics .

Franz Skaupy was honored in 1953 with an honorary doctorate from the Montan University Leoben , the Auer-von-Welsbach Medal , in 1957 the Great Silver Medal for Services to the Republic of Austria and in 1958 with the Plansee plaque .

The Skaupy Prize , also known as the SKAUPY Prize , has been awarded by the Joint Powder Metallurgy Committee since 1982 and is linked to a “Skaupy lecture” on the occasion of the annual Hagen Powder Metallurgy Symposium by the award winner.
