Franz Xaver Fernbach (painter)
Franz Xaver Fernbach (* 1793 in Waldkirch ; † February 25, 1851 in Munich ) was a German painter and painting technician who invented an encaustic process in the 19th century .
Life
As a young man, Franz Xaver Fernbach was busy painting the dials for Black Forest clocks .
From February 4, 1817, he studied for three years at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich . During his studies he earned a living doing various handicrafts. He experimented with different technologies. At an art exhibition in 1820 he showed two painted table tops with a mosaic imitation, which earned him a silver medal from the polytechnic association. King Maximilian I had the works bought for his art collection and ordered a table top with an imitation of a Florentine mosaic . The royal scholarship enabled the artist to study chemistry, mineralogy and physics at the University of Landshut .
The architect and painter Leo von Klenze encouraged him to research the forgotten encaustic painting technique of antiquity. Under King Ludwig I , Fernbach was supported by Georg von Dillis in continuing his experiments and from 1829 onwards he could devote himself exclusively to his practical experiments. At Dillis' suggestion, he used his method to restore the paintings in Forchheim Castle from 1830 to 1832 (removed again from 1906 to 1910). In the Königsbau of the Munich Residenz built by Klenze, Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld and his students painted large-format murals between 1835 and 1842 using the painting technique invented by Fernbach (destroyed in 1944).
In 1834 his first book appeared: About the knowledge and treatment of oil paints . Franz Xaver Fernbach was appointed royal conservator. In 1843 his first handbook Die Oelmalerei. Lehr- und Handbuch , 1845 his second handbook Die encaustic painting. A teaching and manual for artists and art lovers . A planned volume on further painting techniques did not appear.
His son Wilhelm Fernbach (1826-1884) worked as a painter.
