Franz Baron Nopcsa von Felső-Szilvas came from the Hungarian nobility. The Szilvássy family, which can be traced back to the 13th century, was one of his ancestors. His uncle of the same name (* 1815 in Felsőfarkadin, Transylvania; † 1904 in Szecseleváros, Transylvania) was one of the highest court officials of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and from 1868 to 1894 the chief steward of Empress Elisabeth .

Baron Nopcsa was April 20, 1925 to November 28, 1928 Director of the Hungarian Geological Institute in Budapest. Through his membership in numerous scientific societies, he also maintained a wide range of working contacts in Europe. In addition, he was the author of around 150 publications. His most important work, a 3000-page work on Albania , was never published. The manuscript is said to be in Albania today.

Nopcsa died by suicide in Vienna on April 25, 1933, after he had previously shot his partner, the Albanian Bajazid Elmas Doda (* around 1888 in Štirovica, Ottoman Empire ; today North Macedonia ). His grave, now abandoned , was in the urn grove of the Simmering fire hall (Department 3, Ring 3, Group 8, Number 44).
