The Franziskanergymnasium Kreuzburg is a private Roman Catholic high school in sponsorship of the German Franciscan Province in Hesse Großkrotzenburg in the Main-Kinzig-Kreis . In the school, 1250 students are taught by 100 teachers (as of 3/2020).

history

In 1895, the Franciscans founded a boarding school in the hope of training their future offspring there. Since the founding of a school on Prussian territory was not possible due to the Kulturkampf , the Franciscans had to move to the Netherlands .

The first school building was in Watersleyde near Sittard and was in operation from 1897. In addition to a two-story villa, fields for self-sufficiency were also part of the boarding school. School time initially lasted seven years, five of which were completed in the college and two after the novitiate . After the outbreak of the First World War and the introduction of general conscription in Germany, however, the high school time was interrupted by military service, so that the Franciscans decided to let the students acquire the Abitur. Since this was not possible in Watersleyde, the students were sent to Hadamar from 1917 onwards .

In 1933 the school was officially recognized as a school abroad and was thus given the right to take the final examination. This recognition was withdrawn as early as 1938 and the students had to be sent to Hadamar as before. As a result of the outbreak of World War II , students were last sent to Hadamar in 1940.

After the war, the boarding school was supposed to be confiscated as German property by the Dutch authorities, but after intervention by the Bishop of Roermond , the authorities refrained from doing this. The building was temporarily used by the Dutch Franciscans until 1952, after which German students could move into the boarding school again. In the period that followed, however, fewer and fewer students came to Watersleyde, as the expansion of grammar schools in Germany made boarding schools increasingly unnecessary.

In 1967, with the support of Bishop Adolf Bolte von Fulda, the Kreuzburg in Großkrotzenburg in Hesse was acquired. The Kreuzburg was originally built in 1927 as the Africanum grammar school , sponsored by the White Fathers . In this private grammar school with an attached boarding school, the youngsters were trained for missionary work in the religious community in Africa. The boarding school in Watersleyde was sold and now serves as a home for the mentally handicapped.

Since 1967 the Franziskanergymnasium Kreuzburg has been run as a private grammar school without a boarding school. Co-education was introduced in 1973, and since then girls have also been able to attend the Franciscan High School. In 1978 the school received (again) the right to take the school leaving examination, until then the students had to take the non- pupil examination at a state high school.

School life

The school has a supra-regional catchment area. Two thirds of the students come from Hesse, one third from Bavaria. The school is financed jointly by the dioceses of Fulda, Würzburg and Mainz.

The school switched back to the Abitur in 2013 after nine years .

There is a coppice forest with wild boars near the school . A leaflet prepares the pupils on how they should behave when they encounter wild boars.
