The Franciscan convent Heilig Kreuz in Landshuter Freyung is a former convent of the Franciscan women in Landshuter Freyung in Lower Bavaria in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising .

history

The monastery in the Freyung district was founded by Duke Ludwig the Rich around 1480 and abolished in 1802 in the course of secularization in Bavaria . The monastery buildings that still exist today, including the former monastery church, were built in the Baroque style between 1698 and 1701 under Philipp Plank, a lay brother of the Franciscan order .

After the abolition of the monastery, the “Georgianum” seminary of the University of Landshut , which was donated by Duke Georg the Rich and named after him, was initially housed. This state of affairs only lasted until the university was relocated to Munich in 1826 . The Hans-Carossa-Gymnasium (founded in 1629) has been housed in the former monastery building since 1839 - and now also in some of the surrounding buildings . The former monastery church is now used as a school auditorium. After the abolition of the monastery, it was profaned in 1807 and a false ceiling was put in to create more space for the seminary to teach. The original condition was not restored until 1957, and the asam frescos were also exposed again at this time.

description

The church is kept simple according to the rules of the order. It is a single-aisled hall with a stab cap barrel and a clearly drawn-in choir . The Wessobrunn stucco comes from the workshop of Johann Schmuzer and Francesco Mazzari from Como ; the six ceiling frescoes - referring to the Holy Cross patronage - were made by Hans Georg Asam , the father of the famous Asam brothers . Of the early high altar , only the earlier altar sheet with a depiction of the crucifixion of Christ by the Munich painter Andreas Wolff has survived. The side altars, on the other hand, have been lost, in their place there have been two oil paintings since 1957, to the right of the choir a “ Mary in Ear Dress ” from 1519, to the left a “ Christ Salvator ”.
