The football department was founded after the Second World War and played in the lower amateur range until the 1990s. The footballers of the Free TuS gained first supraregional attention when they were promoted to the state league in 1997, when they met teams outside the Upper Palatinate for the first time in league operations . In the same year, the first men's team also secured the district championship title and the Bavarian championship in indoor football. In the first two national league seasons there were also the first competitive match comparisons with the neighbor SSV Jahn Regensburg , with whom the Free TuS shared the training area and who was at its lowest point at the same time. However, Jahn could not be defeated in any game. In 2006, after finishing second, the Red-Blacks took part in the relegation games to the Bayern League , but lost to 1. FC 01 Bamberg in the final . In the 2009/10 season, the Free TuS finally became champions of the state league and rose to the Bayern league for the first time, which is the greatest success in the club's history. After only one year, however, the descent took place as bottom of the table. In 2013 the Regensburg team was relegated again, which after 16 years should mean the farewell to national football. By 2018, Freie TuS had been relegated to the district class two more times and is now only playing in the lower amateur area.
