The Free Radio Innsbruck (freewheel 105.9) is a free radio station based in Innsbruck. It broadcasts on the FM frequencies 105.9 MHz, 106.2 MHz and 89.6 MHz.

history

Since in 1991 in Austria (in contrast to all other European countries) no legal possibilities for non-governmental radios had been created, pirate radios were formed throughout the federal territory . At this time the pirate radio station Radio Radiator could be heard irregularly in Innsbruck .

The activists soon began trying to put their right to freedom of expression in the ether on a meaningful legal basis. Members of Radio Radiator joined forces with activists from other pirate broadcasters in Austria and founded the Pressure group Free Radio .

In 1993, the Radiator activists, organized as the Freirad association, applied for a regional radio license . When this was rejected, Freirad 105.9 filed a complaint with the Constitutional Court , which was upheld.

In 1997 the Regional Radio Act was amended and Freirad 105.9 submitted another application for a radio license (this time a local radio license for the greater Innsbruck area). Unlike in all other federal states, all licenses in Tyrol were granted to purely commercial radios.

After the rejection of the license application for a local radio license for the Innsbruck area, Freirad reported to the private broadcasting authority that there was an urgent need for an additional license in Innsbruck.

In October 1999 Freirad broadcast for the first time, but initially only under a two-week 'event radio license'. The interest of the program makers in this radio was so great that after a few days it was possible to broadcast almost around the clock with in-house productions. Around 150 people organized a varied program.

In 2000 the license found by Freirad as part of the event radio license was put up for tender as a further local radio license for Innsbruck. The selection process ended in December 2001 with the granting of the license for 10 years to Freirad.

Freirad 105.9 has been audible on the VHF frequency 105.9 MHz from Zirl to Schwaz to Matrei since July 2002 .
