The Friends of the Residenz is a Munich citizens' association to rebuild the Residenz that was destroyed in the Second World War .

On February 16, 1945, before the end of the Second World War, Munich citizens came together to found an association to save the badly destroyed residence. The association not only collected funds for the reconstruction, but also shaped the cultural life in the destroyed metropolis through numerous sophisticated cultural events such as concerts, lectures, theater performances and Christmas markets. In contrast to the Munich cultural building fund , which is borne by ordinary citizens , the Friends of the Residenz shaped a more highly cultural and intellectual self-image. On May 6, 1946, they opened the Theater am Brunnenhof, the interim theater for the Bavarian State Theater . The association then called on citizens to donate tin lids from which the tin fittings for the new residence windows and gates could be obtained. In the following year the association organized the Nymphenburg Summer Games , where the Chamber Orchestra of the Munich State Opera also performed under the direction of Georg Solti .

Numerous prominent citizens were members of this association such as Carl Orff , Richard Riemerschmid , Franz Joseph Schöningh , Tino Walz , Hans Döllgast , Hermann Leitenstorfer , Max Hoene , Friedrich von Hausegger , Gert Hornung , Hermann Krings , Hans Thoma or the Oldenbourg family of publishers .

The association is still active today, in addition to the reconstruction of the residence, which has not yet been completed, it is also concerned with the other buildings, gardens and lakes belonging to the Bavarians. Lock management, e.g. For example, the preservation of the English Garden is an objective in the statutes.

The club logo designed by Richard Riemerschmid is decorated with a phoenix rising from the ashes .
