Frieder Schauer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Frieder Schauer (born February 18, 1949 in Brockwitz b. Meißen ; † December 29, 2019 in Lubmin ) was a German microbiologist who worked as both a bacteriologist and a mycologist . From 1992 to 2014 he worked as a professor at the University of Greifswald . Applied microbiology was one of his teaching and research focuses. Schauer was particularly known for his scientific work on the role of microbes in the breakdown of petroleum.

Life

After completing his A-levels in Meißen and studying biology at the University of Greifswald , Schauer received his doctorate in 1982 in the field of physiology of microorganisms on a topic on the degradation of the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa . In 1989 he completed his habilitation at the University of Greifswald with a topic on the physiology of the oil-utilizing yeast Candida maltosa. In 1992 he was appointed university professor for “Special and Applied Microbiology”. From 1980 to 2014 he founded and headed the collection of technically usable microorganisms at the University of Greifswald.

Frieder Schauer died on December 29, 2019 at the age of 70 after a brief serious illness.

Scientific contribution

Schauer dealt with the role of microorganisms as destructors of organic compounds, investigating both the catabolism of natural substrates and the degradation and biotransformation of industrially produced substances by bacteria, yeasts and filamentous fungi. Priority was given to the detoxification of environmental pollutants (including petroleum and its components, disinfectants such as phenols or triclosan , biphenyls , dibenzofurans , endocrine-disrupting bisphenols or environmentally relevant drugs ), with new types of degradation pathways described in trace amounts using microbiological and chemical-analytical methods Structural chemistry was analyzed and new catabolic enzymes involved were characterized. Several studies dealt with cytochrome P450 and ring cleavage reactions and above all the enzyme laccase , which he was one of the first to use for optimizing the application of active pharmaceutical ingredients and for the synthesis of hybrid molecules and biomaterials. Recently, Schauer has also devoted himself to the use of clays, kaolins and biosurfactants in oil accidents , the removal of trace pollutants in wastewater using enzyme filters and the problem of premature rotting of thatched roofs due to fungi.
