Friedrich August Gotthold

Friedrich August Gotthold (born January 2, 1778 in Berlin ; † June 25, 1858 in Königsberg ) was a German educator and important school director of the Royal Collegium Fridericianum in Königsberg / East Prussia .

Life

After losing his father, Gotthold attended the education center and orphanage near Züllichau and the grammar school for the gray monastery in Berlin. From 1798 he studied at the (Pietistic) University of Halle , where he mainly heard the classical philologist Friedrich August Wolf . From 1801 he attended Friedrich Gedike's teacher training college in Berlin.

In 1806 he received a position as vice-principal in Küstrin . In 1810 Wilhelm von Humboldt gave him the post of rector at the Königsberg Collegium Fridericianum , where he was the first headmaster to implement Humboldt's educational reform . He was honored to celebrate his 50th anniversary in this position in 1851. He did not retire until 1852, at the age of 72.

He published numerous articles on grammar school education . His motto was: have a spirit and awaken the spirit . The music lover also emerged in the musicological field. The passionate bibliophile bequeathed his library with 55,000 books to the Königsberg University Library . A composition by Johann Sebastian Bach has recently appeared in his estate.

Gotthold was of historical importance for the education system of the Kingdom of Prussia .
