Friedrich Bachmann (born February 11, 1909 in Wernigerode , † October 1, 1982 in Kiel ) was a German mathematician who dealt with geometry and group theory.

Live and act

Friedrich Bachmann was born as the son of a pastor and teacher in Wernigerode am Harz. His grandfather was the mathematician Paul Bachmann . After graduating from high school in Münster, he studied in Münster and Berlin from 1927 , where he also became a member of the Münster Wingolf. In 1933 he received his doctorate in mathematical logic at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster with Heinrich Scholz , whose assistant he had been since 1931 ( studies on the foundation of arithmetic with special reference to Dedekind, Frege and Russell. Münster, Kramer 1934). There he also began preparatory work for the publication of Gottlob Frege's correspondence with, among others, Bertrand Russell . He then served from 1935 assistant in Marburg at Kurt Reidemeister , where he turned to geometry and his habilitation 1939th

From 1941 Bachmann was a private lecturer in Königsberg and from 1943 at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1949 he was a professor at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel , where he retired in 1977. He became known for his work on geometry, especially for his axiomatic justification of elementary geometry with mirroring operations (previously started by Johannes Hjelmslev and others). In 1959 his main work, Structure of Geometry from the Concept of Reflection, was published by Springer-Verlag.

He was also involved in the mathematics didactic projects of Heinrich Behnke's school in Münster and is co-author of Behnke u. a., of which an English translation was also published by the MIT Press in 1986.

His doctoral students include Andreas Dress and Rolf Lingenberg .

He was married to Bismarck's great-granddaughter , Alexandra von Bredow, and had one child.
