Friedrich Bauer

Markus Friedrich Wolfgang Bauer (born June 14, 1812 in Nuremberg ; † December 13, 1874 in Rothenburg ob der Tauber ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian of the 19th century , also a teacher and Germanist.

Live and act

During his school days at the Melanchthon-Gymnasium in Nuremberg , Bauer received a basic humanistic education. In his theology studies he was particularly influenced by professors Adolf Harleß ( Erlangen ), who familiarized him with the Lutheran confessions, and August Tholuck ( Halle ), who brought him closer to pietistic piety, as well as by his fellow student Wilhelm Löhe , the founder of the Diakoniewerk Neuendettelsau .

Following a request from Löhe in a letter dated October 14, 1841, Friedrich Bauer began to work in the Neuendettelsauer Traktatverein from Nuremberg. In 1846, under Löhe, a "preparatory institution" was founded in Nuremberg to train pastors for their diaspora service in North America. Bauer became the founding rector of this institution (today: Mission EineWelt ). Under his direction, 190 men were trained to serve as pastors and teachers in North America.

Since Friedrich Bauer also taught the German language as a teacher at the Nuremberg Agricultural and Trade School, but had no training, he wrote - probably out of necessity - the work Basics of New High German Grammar for Higher Educational Institutions , which appeared for the first time in 1850. In the 160 pages of the work he presented word formation, word theory, sentence theory and spelling. The book was discovered by a school book publisher and was quickly distributed in Austria and later in Bavaria and Prussia. Bauer kept the work up to date throughout his life together with the Nuremberg linguist and Germanist Georg Frommann . The textbook was continued and published by Konrad Duden after his death and had many editions. His works contributed significantly to the standardization of the German language and established Bauer's reputation as a great language reformer of the 19th century. In addition, he wrote a dogmatics and ethics on a Lutheran basis, which were originally used to train the students of the Neuendettelsau missionary institution.

In 1854 he married the pastor's daughter Julie Walch (1821–1879), who had three children: 1856 Magdalena (later wife of the mission director Martin Deinzer ), 1858 Friedrich (later pastor in the USA) and 1860 Gottlieb (later “treasurer” of the Mission institution). After Wilhelm Löhe's death, Bauer was elected Rectorate Administrator of the Diakonissenanstalt. Two years later he died during a recreational stay in Rothenburg ob der Tauber .
