Friedrich Bleek
Friedrich Bleek (born July 4, 1793 in Ahrensbök ; † February 27, 1859 in Bonn ) was a German theologian and one of the most important biblical scholars of his time. He was the father of the linguist Wilhelm Heinrich Immanuel Bleek .
Life
Born in Ahrensbök near Lübeck as the son of a notary and businessman, Friedrich attended elementary school and from 1804 learned Latin and Greek on the side, so that from 1809 to Easter 1812 he was able to attend the prima of the Lübeck Katharineum .
In 1812 he began studying Protestant theology and philosophy at the University of Kiel, where he also eagerly listened to mathematics and philology. In 1814 he moved to Berlin , studied theology for three years with Schleiermacher, De Wette and Leander and took his theological exams in Schleswig and Glücksburg. In 1821 he received his doctorate in Breslau, and shortly thereafter, in the same year, did his habilitation in Berlin. Immediately afterwards he was appointed associate professor at Berlin University. In 1829 he followed a call to the Bonn Alma Mater and remained a member of the faculty there for 30 years. In 1843 he was appointed consistorial councilor. In 1843/44 he was the rector of the university.
Friedrich Bleek's eldest son was the linguist Wilhelm Heinrich Immanuel Bleek . Friedrich Bleek died suddenly of a stroke on February 27, 1859 in his apartment in Bonn. He was an outstanding scholar and exegete and one of the most important exponents of biblical studies of his time.
The political scientist Wilhelm Bleek is a great-great-grandson of Friedrich Bleek.
