Friedrich Lenthe

Friedrich Christoph Georg Lenthe (born August 22, 1774 in Grabow , † March 14, 1851 in Ludwigslust ) was a German painter.

Life

Friedrich Lenthe was a son of the governor Johann Hinrich Lenthe. He took drawing lessons from Rudolph Kaplunger in Ludwigslust. From 1794 he studied law at the University of Rostock and at the University of Göttingen , where he was also a student of the painter Giovanni Dominicus Fiorillo . In 1801 he began studying at the Dresden Art Academy . Here he was a student of Josef Maria Grassi and Anton Graff . In 1814 Friedrich Lenthe was appointed gallery director of the Mecklenburg-Schwerin art collections. Here he was groundbreaking, because now contemporary works came into Mecklenburg possession. These included pictures by Rudolph Suhrlandt , Theodor Schloepke , Carl Georg Schumacher and Friederike Julie Lisiewska . He set up a drawing class in Ludwigslust and taught the Hereditary Grand Duchess Karoline . In 1818 he was appointed court painter. He created portraits of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I and other public figures. At times he was also the artistic director of the Ludwigslust paper mache factory . His son Gaston Lenthe was a well-known church painter in Mecklenburg.
