He himself married in Altona in 1841 Anna Wilhelmine Theodora Matthiesen (1815–1878), daughter of the administrator in Segeberg Heinrich Matthiesen (1768–1834) from Nieblum , in his second marriage Louise Caroline Georgine Freiin Grote zu Schauen (1790–1855). Life

Thaden studied law in Rostock , Halle and Kiel between 1828 and 1832 . In 1832 he joined the administrations of Flensburg and Pinneberg . Since 1841 Thaden was senior judge in Glückstadt . In 1852 he was appointed to the budget in Copenhagen .

In 1856 Thaden was appointed mayor of Altona, which at that time still belonged to Denmark. Between 1863 and 1883 he was Lord Mayor of the now Prussian Altona. At the same time, Thaden had been the district administrator of the Altona district since 1869.

Thaden directed the development of the city for almost 27 years. New municipal institutions owed him partly for their stimulation, partly for their implementation. During his tenure, the hospital , stock exchange and water supply were built, the Altona Museum founded, and the city theater and tram opened. The city's population doubled from 50,000 to 100,000 during this period, and Thaden played a major role in overcoming the associated problems.

In Altona, Thadenstrasse is named after him, until 1948 Grosse Gärtnerstrasse.
