Friedrich Graf von Westphalen (born July 23, 1940 in Aussig , Sudetenland ) is a German legal scholar and lawyer .

Life

Von Westphalen grew up in Paderborn in a large family belonging to the noble family of the Counts of Westphalen and attended the Jesuit school in Büren . In 1960 he passed his Abitur. He studied law in Münster , Heidelberg , Bonn and Washington DC He also studied political science and attended lectures on history and philosophy . In 1968 he was at the University of Cologne with a dissertation on comparative law of product liability in the American and German law for Dr. jur. PhD .

After passing the second state examination , he initially wanted to become a journalist and not practice law. He had already worked as a student at Rheinischer Merkur and was now working abroad in the Merkur department. In 1969 he became a lawyer in an industrial company. In 1973 he nevertheless settled as a lawyer in Cologne . He initially worked for the Germany-wide Graf von Westphalen law firm , from which the Friedrich Graf von Westphalen & Partner law firm split off later (2010) due to different strategic and management views with the Cologne and Freiburg offices .

Friedrich Graf von Westphalen began to publish legal publications right from the start of his legal practice. He developed into a pioneer in the areas of export finance, product liability , general terms and conditions law and leasing law . From 1998 he taught at Bielefeld University . In 2004 he became an honorary professor at Bielefeld University. Von Westphalen is a founding member of the European Law Institute , a non-profit organization dedicated to legal research and the improvement of European law with the aim of constructively accompanying European integration in the field of European law. He is one of the supporters of the Charter of Fundamental Digital Rights of the European Union , which was published at the end of November 2016.
