Friedrich Hilkenbäumer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Hilkenbäumer (born February 26, 1909 in Dortmund , † June 17, 1976 in Bonn ) was a German fruit growing scientist . He has taught at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Bonn since 1951 . His teaching and manual on fruit growing appeared in several editions.

Life

Friedrich Hilkenbäumer studied after his school days and a horticultural apprenticeship at the Agricultural University Berlin , where he passed the exam as a certified gardener in 1934. He then worked for Theodor Roemer at the University of Halle (Saale) , who at that time attached a fruit growing department to his institute for arable and crop production . In 1935 he joined the NSDAP . Hilkenbäumer had been a member of the Stahlhelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten and SA-Scharführer since 1933 . He was still a member of the NS-Altherrenbund. In 1936 Hilkenbäumer received his doctorate at the University of Berlin with a dissertation on the elimination of the delayed germination in stone fruit seeds. As a scientific assistant to Theodor Roemer, he worked, among other things, on the propagation of fruit bases by root cuttings . In 1938 he took over the management of the Schraderhof fruit research station in Groß-Ottersleben near Magdeburg .

In 1942 Hilkenbäumer completed his habilitation at the University of Halle with a thesis on the mutual influence of rootstock and noble rice under different location conditions. In 1943 he became a lecturer in fruit growing at the University of Halle and in 1947 professor and director of the newly established institute for fruit growing there. In 1946 he joined the SED . In 1951 he followed the call of the University of Bonn to the newly created chair for fruit growing (from 1967: Institute for fruit growing and vegetable growing). Here he worked as a full professor until his retirement in 1976.

Research and Teaching

The breadth of Hilkenbäumer's research activities is characterized by studies of rootstocks and varieties , pruning of trees , the use of low tree shapes , the promotion of morello cherries and the cold storage of fruit . In many of his science-oriented work, he also integrated business management issues . One of his primary research goals was to use the results of science in close cooperation with the experience of practitioners for commercial fruit growing. His advice as a fruit growing expert was sought after in the Federal Republic of Germany and also in the German-speaking neighboring countries. Through lectures , he was able to give many practitioners concrete decision-making aids for fruit growing.

Hilkenbäumer's work as a book author was even more sustainable . Above all with his teaching and manual " Fruit growing. Basics, cultivation and operation " (1944, fourth edition 1964) he gained the highest reputation in professional circles. In addition to books on costing in commercial fruit growing (1958) and fruit storage (1962), he also wrote overview articles in handbooks . The series of publications he wrote " Appropriate working methods in fruit growing " is still considered didactically exemplary . In nine separate booklets, he conveys specific instructions for fruit-growing practice. Some of the booklets appeared in several editions. A 16th edition of the most successful booklet " Schnitt der Obsthöölze " (first edition 1950) was published posthumously in 1998.

Hilkenbäumer was the editor in charge of the magazine " kaufs-Obstbau " for seventeen years . He has published many of his experimental results in this journal. During his twenty-five years at the University of Bonn, he led 63 doctoral students to doctorate.
