Friedrich Hofmann (doctor)

Friedrich Hofmann (born September 1, 1949 in Braunschweig ; † September 2, 2018 ) was a German occupational physician and university professor as well as the author of both scientific and fictional literature.

Life

Hofmann was born the son of a high school teacher and a university professor. After graduating from the old-language branch of the Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Braunschweig, he began studying chemistry at the Technical University of Braunschweig . In 1969 he moved to the Georg-August University in Göttingen and completed his studies with a diploma. From 1972 he studied human medicine in Göttingen, at the same time he worked as a physics and chemistry teacher at the local Hainberg high school . In 1973 he became a Dr. rer. nat. PhD. From April 1974 to May 1979 Hofmann worked as a scientific assistant at the Institute for BiochemistryAlbert Ludwig University of Freiburg . In May 1979 he completed his medical studies in Freiburg with a state examination and doctorate (Dr. med.). Until 1984 he worked as an assistant doctor at the cardiovascular clinic in Waldkirch . He then worked at the University Medical Center in Freiburg , from 1985 as a senior company doctor. In 1986 he passed the specialist examination for occupational medicine, followed by his habilitation in 1989 (occupational medicine / infectious subject). In 1990 he was visiting professor at the Arbetsmijöinstitutet and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm .

From 1995 Hofmann was an adjunct professor for occupational medicine at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg . In the 1996/97 winter semester, Hofmann moved to the Bergische Universität Wuppertal where he held a chair ( C4 professorship ) for occupational physiology, occupational medicine and infection protection, where he worked until the 2015 summer semester. He then worked at the Freiburg Research Center for Occupational and Social Medicine.

He was a member of the Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) at the Robert Koch Institute and from 2007 its chairman. Due to discrepancies and a change in the composition of the body by Health Minister Philipp Rösler in 2011 , Hofmann resigned from his chairmanship and resigned his seat in the STIKO. He was also chairman of the ICOH section Occupational Health for Health Care Workers (1992–2000).

Hofmann was the author and editor of around 50 books and more than 700 scientific publications . He also wrote several popular scientific works with a medical background and some novels. Since 1986 he has organized the “Freiburg Symposia for Occupational Medicine in Health Services” together with Ulrich Stößel and Georg Reschauer.

Hofmann died in September 2018, one day after his 69th birthday.

Memberships

Hofmann was a member (PG II) of the committee for occupational medicine of the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs. Other memberships existed with the Society of German Chemists, the Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the German Society for Occupational Medicine and Environmental Medicine, the Association of German Company and Company Doctors and the International Commission of Occupational Health.
