Friedrich Karl Elze

Friedrich Karl Elze (born May 22, 1821 in Dessau , † January 21, 1889 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German Anglist and Shakespeare researcher .

life and work

Friedrich Karl Elze was the son of the pastor Karl August Wilhelm Elze. He studied 1839-1843 in Leipzig and Berlin until Classical Philology , then later, especially English literature, and made for this purpose repeated study trips to London and Edinburgh . I.a. he was a student of the classical philologists Gottfried Hermann and August Boeckh . After he had worked more than 25 years at Dessauer High School, was on 13 March 1876 by the associate professor of English language and literature in the newly established Department of English Philology at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg to Professor appointed. This year is considered the official founding year of English studies in Halle. Elze died in 1889 at the age of 68.

In particular, dealing with the Elizabethan Age and Romanticism was the main focus of Elze's literary-historical work. 1853-1854 he published Atlantis, the magazine for life and literature in England and America . A critical edition of Shakespeare's Hamlet (Leipzig 1857) was followed by editions of Chapman's Alphonsus, Emperor of Germany (Leipzig 1867) and Rowley's When you see me, you know me (Dessau 1874). He also wrote biographies on Walter Scott (2 volumes, Dresden 1864), Byron (Berlin 1870; English London 1872) and Shakespeare (Halle 1876; English London 1888), the first scholarly of this important English playwright in German. He was one of the most active members of the German Shakespeare Society since its inception, especially since the publication of the Shakespeare Yearbook (volumes 3-14, 1867–1879) was entrusted to him after Bodenstedt's resignation .

In the electoral period from 1872 to 1878 Elz was a member of the state parliament of the Duchy of Anhalt . He was elected in a by-election in the 1st constituency of the cities after Albert Bolze resigned from his seat.
