Friedrich Wilhelm Lorentz (born November 9, 1803 in Kreuznach ; † May 10, 1861 in Bonn ) was a German historian and educator .

Life

Lorentz went to the high school in Kreuznach , where he received lessons from Gerd Eilers , with whom he later remained friends. Lorentz studied philosophy and philology in Bonn, Heidelberg and Berlin from 1821 to 1826 . During his studies in 1821 he became a member of the Bonn fraternity Germania . In addition to his studies, he worked as a private tutor for an English family on the recommendation of Friedrich Christoph Schlosser and studied the English language and literature . In Berlin he was awarded Dr. phil. PhD .

After completing his studies, he worked as a translator . In 1830 he became an associate professor at the University of Halle . In 1832 he went to the main Pedagogical Institute in St. Petersburg as a professor . From 1836 to 1838 he also worked as an editor of the St. Petersburg newspaper , which was published by the Imperial Academy of Sciences . In 1840 he became director of the German secondary schools in St. Petri . He became an Imperial Russian State Councilor. In 1857 he retired and went to Bonn as an honorary professor . In 1858 he contracted pneumonia and died in 1861.
