Friedrich Ludwig Karl Weigand (born November 18, 1804 in Nieder-Florstadt ; † June 30, 1878 ) was a German spokesman for "historical" spelling.

Life

Weigand attended the school teachers' seminar in Friedberg from 1821 to 1824 , then worked for several years as an educator in the house of General von Müffling in Mainz and, after he had meanwhile prepared himself for the final exam through private studies, moved in 1830 to the University of Giessen , where he studied theology and philology until 1833 studied.

Subsequently, he was a teacher at the Realschule in Michelstadt , in 1837 at the Provincial School in Gießen, of which he was director from 1855 to 1867, and in 1846 was also ordained as a Protestant clergyman. After he had already started to give lectures on German philology and literature at the University of Giessen in 1849 , he was appointed extraordinary professor in 1851 and full professor for those subjects in 1867.

After Jacob Grimm's death (1863) he took over the continuation of the German dictionary of the Brothers Grimm with Rudolf Hildebrand , in which he had been most active from the beginning.
