Friedrich Schatz

Christian Friedrich Schatz (born November 17, 1841 in Plauen , † May 21, 1920 in Rostock ) was a German gynecologist and rector of the University of Rostock .

Life

Friedrich Schatz studied medicine at the University of Leipzig , where he received his doctorate in medicine in 1867. Since the summer of 1863 Schatz was a member of the Leipzig University Choir of St. Pauli (now the German Choir ). From 1868, Schatz worked as an assistant doctor in the gynecological clinic with Carl Siegmund Franz Credé and then as a general practitioner in the Leipzig area. In 1872 he was appointed full professor at the University of Rostock, where he became director of the Clinic for Obstetrics and Gynecology and head of the State Midwifery Institute in Rostock. During his time as director, Schatz campaigned for a new building for the women's clinic in 1873, which was set up in 1886/87 after some difficulties. In 1880 Schatz was elected Rector of the University of Rostock, which office he only held once and with a focus on general and special education. In 1885 Friedrich Schatz was a member of the founding committee of the German Society for Gynecology , from which the board of the new society emerged, to which he belonged for several years as treasurer . In 1906 Schatz left the university at his own request and resigned from the clinic's office as director. Otto Claudius Sarwey was appointed his successor .

Act

In scientific work, Schatz distinguished himself through numerous publications, such as on the birth mechanism, intrauterine pressure measurements, the periodicity of labor and placental studies and causes of various child positions . His studies of mortality in childbed led him to reorganize midwifery, so that child mortality in Mecklenburg fell suddenly. In 1881/82, Schatz was one of the first to describe an amniotic fluid puncture ( amniocentesis ) for the treatment of increased amniotic fluid ( hydramnios ).
