Friedrich Stift (born May 30, 1961 ; Chinese  石 迪福 , Pinyin Shídí Fú ) is an Austrian diplomat . Since July 2017 he has been the ambassador of the Republic of Austria to the People's Republic of China and Mongolia .

Diplomatic career

Friedrich Stift studied law at the University of Vienna between 1980 and 1985 ; then he did military service. After a year in court and a brief employment with Interunfall-Versicherung in Vienna in 1987, Stift pursued postgraduate studies at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University in Bologna and Washington, DC until 1989 , which he completed with a Master of Arts (MA) graduated.

In 1989, Stift joined the Austrian Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs (BMEIA). In addition to posts in the Austrian embassies in Washington, DC (1992–1995) and Riyadh (1995–1999), he worked in the Foreign Ministry until 2002 in the press department and as deputy head of the secretary general. He was then deputy head of mission at the Austrian Embassy in Beijing from 2002 to 2004 . Here he was involved in an unusual action in March 2003: the loan of two panda bears to Schönbrunn Zoo .

He held his first ambassadorial post for the Republic of Austria when he returned to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from 2004 to 2008 at the Austrian Embassy in Riyadh. During this time, Federal President Fischer's state visit in 2006 was one of the professional highlights of Stift. In 2009 he returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vienna as Head of Department II / 4 (Near and Middle East, Maghreb and Maschrek countries), where he had also been Deputy Political Director of Section II at the BMEIA since 2012.

From the end of September 2013 to 2017, Stift was the Austrian ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran in Tehran . Since July 13, 2017 he has been - as successor to Irene Giner-Reichl - extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of the Republic of Austria to the People's Republic of China and Mongolia at the embassy in Beijing.

Friedrich Stift speaks English, French and "a little Italian".
