Stefan Scholz (diplomat)

Stefan Scholz (born March 31, 1966 in Vienna ) is an Austrian diplomat . He has been the Austrian ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran since 2017 .

Life and diplomatic career

Stefan Scholz studied political science , history and law at the University of Vienna from 1984 to 1989 and graduated with a master's thesis on "Austrian East Politics". He then spent a semester as a visiting student at Stanford University on a Fulbright scholarship . The doctoral degree Dr. phil. was awarded to him in 1991 by the University of Vienna (dissertation: “The role of US Food Aid in Austrian Politics in the aftermath of World War I”). This was followed by university positions at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University in Bologna (1991–1992) and at the University Institute for International Studies and Development in Geneva (1992–1993).

His diplomatic career began in 1993 in the Department for Humanitarian Measures, Asylum and Migration at the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs (Austrian Foreign Ministry), in contact with UNHCR , ICRC , IOM and OCHA . Scholz was then a member of the Austrian delegation to the conference on disarmament at the Permanent Mission of Austria to the United Nations in Geneva until 1994 and in 1995 as permanent representative to the OSCE in Vienna.

1995–1999: First assignment at the Austrian Embassy in Washington DC, responsible for economic relations, agricultural policy and US politics in international organizations (World Bank, IMF etc.).

From 1999 to 2002 he worked as an advisor to the Austrian delegation to UNHCR, ILO, IOM, ICRC, IFRC, OHCHR and OCHA at the Permanent Mission of Austria to the United Nations in Geneva. Then until 2004 in the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs.

From 2004 to 2009 Scholz was employed at the Austrian Embassy in Beijing . From 2009 to 2012 Scholz was the Austrian ambassador to Nigeria and permanent representative to the West African Economic Community ( ECOWAS). He then worked until 2017 for planning and program matters in development and cooperation with Eastern Europe (EZA) and transition aid.

Scholz has been the Austrian ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran since 2017, succeeding Friedrich Stift .

Private

Stefan Scholz is married and has five children. He is fluent in English and French as well as some Chinese.
