Friedrich Wilhelm Rettberg (born August 21, 1805 in Celle ; † April 7, 1849 in Marburg ) was a German Protestant church historian and theologian.

Life

Rettberg, whose parents died early, attended a high school in his hometown. From 1824 to 1827 he studied philology and Protestant theology in Göttingen and in 1827 in Berlin . In 1827 he was awarded a doctorate in philosophy in Göttingen. Friedrich Rettberg worked as a high school teacher in Celle from 1827 to 1830; for the next three years he held a position as a repetitionist in the theological faculty in Göttingen. For a further three years, Rettberg worked as an assistant preacher at the St. Jacobi Church in Göttingen. He was awarded a license in Protestant theology in 1833; the next year he was appointed associate professor of Protestant theology. In 1838 he was appointed doctor of Protestant theology and at the same time appointed as a full professor to Marburg, where he was rector in 1841/42 and 1848/49 (until his death) . From 1847 Friedrich Wilhelm Rettberg was a member of the Upper Hessian consistory.
