Friedrich von Seherr and Thoß was the son of Baron Carl Friedrich von Seherr and Thoß (June 17, 1754 in Eichholz near Liegnitz ; † March 4, 1814 in Hohenfriedeberg), district administrator of the formerly united districts of Bolkenhain and Landeshut and his wife Eleonore Johanna, née . von Pertkenau, born.

He studied law at the University of Frankfurt (Oder) and the University of Leipzig , but broke off his studies because of the war against the French and volunteered for the army.
