The Fritz-Schloß-Park is a dedicated park in the Berlin district of Moabit in the Mitte district .

location

The park and the Poststadion sports area are located in Stephankiez between Rathenower , Krupp , Seydlitz and Lehrter Strasse . With an area of around twelve hectares , the Fritz-Schloß-Park is the largest green space in the Moabit district. Together with the sports facilities of the Poststadion, the area forms the SportPark Poststadion. The block is surrounded by residential, commercial and school buildings, some in former barracks .

history

The Fritz-Schloß-Park is located on the former parade ground of the 2nd Guard Uhlan Regiment . Due to the Versailles Treaty with its military restrictions on an army of 100,000 men, the parade ground was abandoned after the First World War . In the eastern area, the Post Sports Club of the Reichspost built the Post Stadium between 1926 and 1929 , which is connected to a spacious sports park. What remained until the end of the Second World War were the barracks along Rathenower Straße with a smaller barracks yard behind them. This courtyard is the same size as the current Fritz-Schloß-Park. The ruins of the bombed barracks and other building rubble were heaped up to form a hill. In honor of the rubble women , there is a relief in the park by Alfred Frenkel with the inscription: “Thanks to the emergency workers”.

Memorial for the emergency workers by Alfred Frenkel

The Fritz-Schloß-Park was laid out on the rubble dump in the 1950s - according to plans by Wilhelm Alverdes , the then head of the zoo's horticultural office. The first district mayor elected after the Second World War, Fritz Schloß (1895–1954), is honored by name.

deals

In the park there are two playgrounds, a mini golf course , a toboggan run , a dog playground and the Moabiter Kinder-Hof - a children's construction yard and adventure playground . The Fritz-Schloß-Park has two hills, the south plateau to which there is a climbing path and another hill (53.1 meters high) with the memorial stone for Fritz Schloß.

A 1.1-kilometer circular route with fitness equipment runs through the park, separated from the rest of the trails by a red surface . Distance points are installed every 50 meters so that those who do sports can orient themselves.

In 2016, the part of the Fritz-Schloß-Park owned by the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks (Rathenower Straße corner Seydlitzstraße with around three hectares ) was purchased by the Mitte district through the urban redevelopment program West in order to secure the areas permanently as green spaces. Urban redevelopment funds have been used to a considerable extent to upgrade the Fritz-Schloß-Park since 2008.

Executed and planned construction work

  • The construction of a new daycare center at Seydlitzstrasse 11 has been in the planning stage since 2015.
  • The playground on Seydlitzstraße received a water pump in 2019 and thus became a mud area .
  • The Moabiter Kinderhof is to get a new playhouse. After the completed planning and preparatory work, the house is to be built by 2021/2022.
  • A new park entrance is to be built at Rathenower Strasse 16.

Transport connection plans

An underground station on the U5 line is planned at Fritz-Schloß-Park , which is to be extended from the main station via Turmstrasse ( line U9 ) and Jungfernheide ( line U7 ) to Tegel Airport . The realization of the extension plans is uncertain in view of the budget situation in Berlin, especially since Tegel Airport is to be closed in favor of Berlin Brandenburg Airport . However, due to poor planning, the opening of the new airport has been postponed to the end of October 2020.

Between Turmstrasse / Rathenower Strasse via Fritz-Schloß-Park to Heidestrasse, a continuous pedestrian and bicycle connection, the so-called Döberitz connection , is to be created in the long term . So far, only the section in Fritz-Schloß-Park and another south of the sports facilities of the Poststadion have been completed.
