Fritz Bilz (* 1944 in Riedenburg ) is a German historian and publicist . He has also been working as a painter and graphic artist since 1985.

Life

Fritz Bilz has lived in his parents' house in the Cologne suburb of Brück since 1945 . He grew up as a working class child, for whom it was not made easy at the Mülheim high school. He graduated from secondary school, did an apprenticeship and was able to go to engineering school. He worked in various professions, including packer, construction worker, civil engineer, secondary school teacher, union secretary , branch manager, historian and publicist. It was not until the late 1980s that he discovered his love for writing and wrote his first essays on historical issues as part of the local history workshop in Cologne-Brück . He deepened this by studying. In 1999 he completed his studies in Middle and New History at the University of Cologne with a master's degree . In 2007 he was there with Wolfgang Schieder with the work Between Chapel and Factory. The social history of Kalks from 1850 to 1910 doctorate. The social and cultural-historical perspective deals with today's Cologne district of Kalk, which was an independent city until 1910.

Since 1989, in addition to his monographs, more than 60 essays and miscells can be listed, which mainly represent the result of Fritz Bilz's historical research. The focus of this research is on historical facts from the region, in particular with the main focus on everyday history, the history of workers and National Socialism . Bilz comes from the history workshops movement that emerged as part of the New Social Movements in the early 1980s. Committed to researching and presenting regional history from below , he was a co-founder of the history workshop in Cologne-Brück and the history workshop in Cologne-Kalk, and passed on his knowledge to interested parties through relevant publications and a variety of tours.

In addition, since 1988 Bilz has been conveying history in an understandable way in the Cologne suburbs of Brück, Kalk and Mülheim as well as the city center as part of over 200 historical tours . Since 2002 he has also been guiding primary school and secondary school children through the suburbs of Brück and Kalk.

Awards

In 1998 he was awarded the Rhineland Taler for his "services to landscape culture" . In 2015, Bilz was awarded the CologneEngagiert honorary prize by the City of Cologne. In 2016 he received the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia .

Bilz Foundation

When Fritz Bilz sifted through her estate after his mother's death, he found previously unknown savings balances and coins worth around half a million DM. As their livelihood seemed secure, the couple decided in 1998 to set up a charitable foundation. Every year, the “Bilz Foundation” honors local and regional institutions that either devote themselves to international understanding, stand up for those persecuted politically, racially or religiously, or against discrimination against minorities. The Bilz Prize is endowed with € 5000 annually.
