The Peace Education Center Cologne ( FBK ) was founded in 1982 by members of the Cologne peace movement. As an educational institution, the FBK advocates nonviolence , political participation and social justice . Roland Schüler has been the managing director since 1989. The peace education organization has its headquarters in Cologne .

The FBK is part of various peace alliance organizations on a national, European and global level.

history

The establishment of the Peace Education Center took place under the influence of the NATO double resolution. A broad peace movement developed. For the first time, many people dealt intensively with questions about war and peace , what military security concepts mean and what effects the use of nuclear weapons has. To support this free learning, the peace education organization was founded by people from the peace movement. In the second Gulf War in 1991, the Peace Education Organization was active in the major protest against the war and, together with StadtRevue and the Ecological Education Organization, had published its own newspaper for information. From 1992 onwards, constructive conflict management, non-violent communication and mediation were given an important place.

tasks

The Peace Education Center in Cologne focuses primarily on series of lectures and discussion events on political issues, as well as advanced training in mediation and language courses. Advanced training in mediation and language courses are offered in the form of individual lectures, series and educational leave. The FBK operates nationwide as an educational institution in the context of further education and offers educational leave for all people in the Federal Republic of Germany. The main concern of the FBK is the idea of ​​peace as a framework for educational work , political and social developments and mediation as a solution to conflicts . The thematic focal points of mediation include mediation in building and planning, dispute settlement by and with people with intellectual disabilities, as well as intercultural mediation . The FBK works locally and globally for political détente, global disarmament , intra-societal nonviolence and social justice . The Peace Education Center in Cologne supported international projects in Colombia, Bolivia, Costa Rica and Ethiopia. In addition to advanced training in mediation and languages, the FBK tries to sensitize politics and business to socio-political issues through events and seminars.

The Peace Education Center in Cologne works in partnership with people in Cologne and all of Germany. The FBK provides support with events and projects and through educational work for young people and adults. The Peace Education Center in Cologne is involved in various organizations and working groups: Working group Cologne further education, Action Group Service for Peace , German Peace Society - United War Resisters, QvB Nonviolent Paths in Conflict, Quality Association for Professional Further Education Cologne, Nazi Documentation Center of the City of Cologne , KölnArchiv eV, Civilian Platform Conflict resolution , NS Documentation Center of the City of Cologne, Federal Mediation Association , non-profit workshops Cologne-Rodenkirchen, Cologne Peace Forum.

The FBK is important as an educational institution and as part of the peace movement . The Peace Education Center in Cologne is a state-recognized adult education institution .

quality control

The Friedensbildungswerk Köln eV has subjected itself to the LQW procedure for small organizations. LQW stands for “learning-oriented quality testing in further education”, has its starting point and reference point in the learning process and focuses on the needs of the learners. The certifications and tests of the certification organization CertQua also took place.

Donations & sponsors

The Friedensbildungswerk is an adult education institution recognized and financially supported by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . In addition, the organization is financed from private donations.

Mission statement

The FBK is committed to a comprehensive understanding of peace that is characterized by  nonviolence , participation , justice  and  solidarity . Since the foundation of the FBK, peace education has been understood as “education for peace, for international understanding and for enabling the free development of the individual for democratic participation” (from the statutes of the association). The Bildungswerk is also an active member of (Cologne)  civil society . It participates in cooperation projects such as B. Exhibitions, film evenings and memorial events. In addition to its very own role as an educational provider, the Bildungswerk also acts as a  clearing house and platform , arranging speakers and contacts, initiating projects and providing event rooms, in particular for networking civil society activities.

honors and awards

• In 2015 the Peace Education Center in Cologne was awarded the Bilz Prize
• 2011–2013 Roland Schüler was appointed to the interdisciplinary advisory board to mediate mosque construction conflicts in Germany
• On January 20, 2011, Roland Schüler received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his civil society work in the FBK
• In 2008 the “First Cologne Innovation Prize for Disabled Policy” was awarded to the FBK
