Irene Franken (* 1952 in Düsseldorf ) is a German historian and journalist . She is co-founder of the Cologne Women's History Association and was awarded alternative honorary citizenship in Cologne in 2017 .

Life

From 1964 to 1972 Irene Franken attended the Clara Schumann Municipal Gymnasium in Düsseldorf. She then studied at the University of Cologne , the subjects German and history for the teacher at the junior high school . From 1979 to 1981 she worked as a secondary school teacher and passed her second state examination for teaching at secondary schools. From 1978 she organized readings, exhibitions and public relations in the women's bookstore Rhiannon . In 1984 she and Gwen Edith Kiesewalter founded the women's history project Frau Dr. Faust meets Agrippina , from which the Cologne Women's History Association was founded in 1986. Irene Franken was one of the initiators and founders of the association, of which she has been managing director since 1989. Since then she has designed museum tours and city excursions especially for women as well as numerous exhibitions, among others in cooperation with the Anne Frank House Amsterdam , the NS Documentation Center of the City of Cologne , the Social Service of Catholic Women and the Rhineland Regional Council . In 1986 she was involved in the founding of the union of the German, Swiss and Austrian city guides Miss Marple's sisters . Irene Franken was involved in various research projects a. a. of the Cologne Archives and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation for the Stories of Women in Cologne. From 1992 she was involved in setting up and organizing the Feminist Archive and Documentation Center in the FrauenMediaTurm in Cologne . From 1999 to 2005 Irene Franken was employed by the Rhineland Regional Council, initially at the Equal Opportunities Office, and from 2002 as Deputy General Manager for Press and Marketing.

In 2015, she was appointed regional jury member for the Federal President's history competition for young people.

In 1986, in Cologne, she campaigned for the Seidenmachergäßchen and Unter Riemenschneidern to be renamed to the new street names Seidenmacherinnengäßchen and Unter Seidmacherinnen , after she was able to prove through historical research that only women were active in this profession. Through her intervention, together with Petra May, it was achieved in 1987 that instead of the originally five statues originally planned, 18 women from Cologne's city history were included in the figure program at the Cologne council tower .

Awards

1997 Irene Franken received in recognition "for his outstanding achievements in the scenic Culture Care" from the Rhineland Regional Council the Rhineland dollars . In 2004, Irene Franken received the Inge von Bönninghausen Prize for her decades of feminist commitment . Together with the Cologne Women's History Association, she was awarded the Anneke Prize in 2015. On January 8, 2017, Irene Franken received alternative honorary citizenship from the citizens' committee for her commitment to researching the history of women in Cologne.
