Gurnee is a city in Lake County , Illinois , United States . According to the 2010 census, there were 31,295 residents in the city. The city is bordered by Waukegan , Illinois, and is considered part of the wider Chicago metropolitan area . Gurnee is known for the Six Flags Great America theme park . In the city of many players live Chicago Bears , as the NFL record holder Devin Hester . Gurnee benefits from its location between Milwaukee and Chicago. The city is named after Walter S. Gurnee , a former mayor of Chicago.
history
Early settlers in the Gurnee area came on foot, on horseback, and in prairie schooners , ox-drawn carts, or via the Erie Canal and the Great Lakes . They came from the city of Warren, New York , named after Major General Joseph Warren , who was killed in the Battle of Bunker Hill. The Warren Township in Lake County, Illinois, founded in 1850, was named after him. The first settlement of Warren Township began in 1835 in the area of the Des Plaines River.
In 1835-36, a New York county company built a town house on the site of the old Gurnee Grade School that was suitable for housing families while that land was being allocated. They also received government grants for their farms. There was a ford near the town house through which the Potawatomi Indians crossed the river. A floating tree trunk bridge was built there around 1942. Later a stable wooden bridge was built before an iron bridge was built later.
With the construction of a permanent bridge, roads were also built and the area became the center of the municipality. At this junction, Milwaukee Road crossed the river west to east and then continued northeast to connect Chicago with Milwaukee. This road was planned in 1836 by three early settlers, Thomas McClure, Mark Noble, and Richard Steele.

According to the 2010 census, the city has an area of 35 square kilometers, of which 99.48% land area and 0.059% water area. Gurnee is on the Des Plaines River . Interstate 94 divides the city into an east and west part.
