Fritz Borgnis

Fritz E. Borgnis (born December 24, 1906 in Mannheim ; † August 27, 1982 in Zurich ) was a German-Swiss electrical engineer , physicist and university professor .

Career

Borgnis graduated from a humanistic grammar school and graduated in 1929 with a degree in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Munich . This was followed by additional studies in mathematics and physics at the University of Munich , where he received his doctorate in 1936 in the field of power conduction by means of convection and diffusion (Dr. Ing.). In 1940 he gained with a thesis on electromagnetic natural oscillations dielectric rooms habilitation . He then worked for seven years at the University of Graz and from 1948 to 1950 at the ETH Zurich . Borgnis then spent seven years in the United States as a research assistant and visiting professor at various universities. From 1957 to 1960 he held the position of research director at Allgemeine Deutsche Philips Industrie . In 1960 he was appointed to the ETH Zurich, where he took over the management of the Institute for High Frequency Technology . As a full professor in this field, he trained hundreds of graduate engineers and was also a multiple doctoral supervisor.

Since 1963, equipment for measuring the flow velocity of liquids using ultrasound has been developed at his institute . A number of specialist articles describe the progress made, including clinical trials in blood vessels.

Borgnis married Gerda Maschinda in 1964.

He retired from ETH in 1977.
