Life

Fritz Breuer's father Friedrich "Fritz" Breuer was mayor of Vilich from 1891 to 1919 .

Breuer studied medicine at the University of Cologne and at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and received his doctorate in Cologne in 1921 with a thesis on "Vegetative nervous system and blood count, especially in surgical tuberculosis". He then began his medical career as an assistant doctor in the internal department of the St. Vinzenz Hospital in Cologne-Nippes . From 1922 to 1923 he worked at the Pathological Institute of the University Clinic and at the University Women's Clinic in Cologne. This was followed by twelve years as an assistant and senior physician under Otto Tilmann and Hans von Haberer at the Surgical University Clinic in Cologne. Breuer published numerous articles in medical journals. In 1935 he became the chief physician of the surgical department at the hospital Zum Heiligen Geist in Hagen-Haspe, which was demolished at the beginning of the 21st century .

In 1948 the Breuer family accommodated Joseph Caspar Witsch and his family in their home in Hagen-Haspe after they had fled Jena . The Witsch and Breuer families had been friends in Cologne since the 1920s. In November 1948, Breuer was one of the first shareholders in the Kiepenheuer & Witsch publishing house . Breuer was also active as a patron . He supported the Hagen painter Emil Schumacher and others through acquisitions . Breuer's first art collection was burned in a bomb attack, and after the war he and his wife Maria built up a private art collection again. The Breuer's house was considered a literary and artistic meeting place.

Fritz Breuer was chief physician at the Hospital of the Holy Spirit in Hagen-Haspe until 1964. He died in Alzen near Morsbach in 1965, two days after his 69th birthday . He left behind his wife and a son.
