Fritz Gilsi
Hans Fritz Gilsi (born March 12, 1878 in Zurich ; † May 11, 1961 in St. Gallen ) was a Swiss graphic artist and painter .
Life
Fritz Gilsi was the son of the lithographer Hans Gilsi. The family moved to Paris in 1879, so that Fritz Gilsi grew up in Paris. There he attended Bernard Palissy's drawing school. In 1895 he returned to Switzerland and took courses at the applied arts school in Zurich with Augusto Giacometti . He then began training at the drawing school for industry and commerce in St. Gallen . Before graduating, he left this school to work as an industrial draftsman for fabrics and wallpapers in Paris.
From 1904 he spent the rest of his professional life in St. Gallen, only interrupted by study visits to Paris. In 1922, his wife Emmy died of an illness. At that time Gilsi accepted a position as main teacher at the arts and crafts department of the trade school in St. Gallen, which he held until his retirement in 1944. At the same time, he worked as a draftsman of political caricatures for the Swiss satirical magazine Nebelspalter. His son René Gilsi pursued a similar career as an artist and employee of the Nebelspalter .
As a painter initially committed to the Impressionist style, Fritz Gilsi later emphasized the symbolist, decorative form of the image. In addition to oil paintings , especially portraits of children, he created around 80 etchings that made him famous beyond the country's borders. Over 100 occasional graphics, mostly with symbolistic motifs, with a strong emphasis on outlines followed.
