During his research he comes across reports of a serial killer from Düsseldorf. Lang travels from Berlin to the Rhineland and joins the detective commissioner Ernst Gennat , who heads the investigation. Peter Kürten is arrested as a suspect , Fritz Lang is given the opportunity to interview Kürten.
When he meets Anna Cohn, girlfriend of a victim and alleged eyewitness, he is overwhelmed by memories of his first wife Lisa, who looks extremely similar to Anna, and who Lang shot when she caught him with Thea von Harbou.

reception
Reviews
DJ Frederiksson from the Frankfurter Rundschau describes the film as a “rousing reflection on drive, guilt and art”, which pleasantly sets itself apart from “the actually unsavory double sin of docu-drama and film-about-film ”. Frederiksson praises Heino Ferch, "the black and white image design and the lighting moods" and the "clever visual and cinematic ideas".
Jörg Schöning from Spiegel Online also praises Heino Ferch and Samuel Finzi for their game and emphasizes the vacuum left by the unexplained death of Lang's first wife and which the film “cleverly only circles around”. In addition, nobody “handles the integration of historical film material so confidently like Gordian Maugg. "
Awards
The film was shown in the competition of the 15th Festival of German Films in 2016. It won the Hessian Film Prize 2016 in the category of best feature film .
