At 2,360 meters, the Fritzerkogel is one of the higher peaks in the Tennengebirge in the northern Limestone Alps . When viewed from the north, it is conspicuous as a relatively isolated, wide block that breaks off on all sides with considerable rock faces and steep crags. The 1,200-meter-high southern slopes are particularly impressive and make the Fritzerkogel a striking two-thousand- meter peak .

location

The Fritzerkogel rises in the eastern part of the Tennengebirge high above the Lammer valley between Abtenau and Annaberg-Lungötz . Thus it presents itself directly opposite the Gosaukamm, Bischofsmütze and Dachstein Mountains . The actual karst plateau of the Tennengebirge lies further west behind the Bleikogel . That is why the Fritzerkogel is such a striking peak that is often climbed and of course offers an excellent view on all sides. The base for an ascent is the Laufener Hütte of the Alpine Club .

To the west of the Fritzerkogel lies the Kleine Fritzerkogel ( 2287  m above sea level , 47 ° 31 '  N , 13 ° 19'  E ), which is why the Fritzerkogel is sometimes also called the Großer Fritzerkogel .

Routes

The Fritzerkogel is one of the more popular mountains in the Tennengebirge, but it is not entirely unproblematic to climb. Requirements are surefootedness , a head for heights , good physical condition and alpine experience. Unexpected dangers, such as getting lost in fog or sudden storms, make the Tennengebirge a feared area among mountaineers. As a rule, the ascent to the Laufener Hütte is from Abtenau . From there there are two variants:

  • over the east side, distance: 2 hours, difference in altitude: 650 m.

This steep route is considered the normal route and leads from the Laufener Hütte initially southwards over grass and pine slopes as well as several hollows on one shoulder. Pivoting to the right there and due to the very steep eastern flank, quite exposed over Schrofen terrain to the summit with a cross. Marked throughout, difficulty I according to UIAA .

  • over the west side, distance: 2.5 hours, difference in altitude: 650 m.

This route is a little easier, but also a little longer, which first leads westwards from the Laufener Hütte into the Tennkessel and after 15 minutes turns left (straight to the Bleikogel). It is also quite steep through a scree cirque and the so-called Eiskeller into a notch west of the summit. Finally over grass slopes to the summit with a cross without any problems. Marked throughout, not difficult . In winter this route is often used as a ski tour .
