Furcraea cahum is a species of the genus Furcraea in the subfamily of the agave family (Agavoideae). Thespecific epithet cahum is derived from the common Spanish common name "Cahum" for the speciesin southern Mexico.

description

The rosettes of Furcraea cahum form a trunk up to 1 meter long. The sword-shaped, broadly tapering leaves are flat. Their bright green leaf blades are 160 to 210 centimeters long (rarely up to 240 centimeters) and 6.5 to 9 centimeters wide. It narrows above the base to 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters. On the leaf margins there are forward-facing or straight, reddish to black marginal teeth 2 to 4 millimeters in length. The edge of the leaf is more or less straight between the 2 to 4 centimeters (rarely up to 5 centimeters) apart. The end mandrel is 2 to 6 millimeters long and 1.5 to 2.5 millimeters wide.

The abundant bulbils bearing inflorescence reaches a height of 4 to 5 meters, and has a long shank. The branches of the inflorescence and the flowers are tiny papilla-hairy. The bracts are much shorter than the 4 to 6 millimeters (rarely up to 10 millimeters) long, downy-haired flower stalks . The flowers, which stand together in pairs to four, are 40 to 45 millimeters long (rarely up to 50 millimeters). Your elliptical, yellowish green tepals are 20 to 25 millimeters long and 9 to 12 millimeters wide. The stamens are 10 to 14 millimeters long. The ovary has a length of 20 to 27 millimeters.

The fruits reach a length of 5 centimeters and a width of 3 to 3.5 centimeters. They contain seeds 9 to 12 millimeters long and 5 to 8 millimeters wide .

Systematics and distribution

Furcraea cahum is common in the Mexican states of Campeche , Quintana Roo and Yucatán in tropical, semi-deciduous forests up to 100 meters in height.

The first description by William Trelease was published in 1910. According to R. Govaerts, Furcraea cahum is Trel. a synonym of Furcraea hexapetala (Jacq.) Urb.

Furcraea cahum is classified in the genus in the section Furcraea .
