Furcraea macdougallii is a species of the genus Furcraea in the subfamily of the agave family (Agavoideae). The specific epithet macdougallii honors the North American botanist Thomas Baillie MacDougall (1895–1973).

description

Furcraea macdougallii grows tree-shaped with 6 to 8 meter high, slender and unbranched trunks. The numerous straight, linear leaves are concave and gradually tapering to a point. They are upright to protruding when young, old leaves are knocked back and persistent. Their green, leathery leaf blades , rough on both sides , are 120 to 145 centimeters long and 6 to 7 centimeters wide. The rounded reddish tip is slightly hardened. Teeth 1 to 3 millimeters long sit on the heavily reinforced leaf edges.

The robust and strongly branched inflorescence reaches a height of 5 to 8 meters. The finely downy to felty partial inflorescences are 1 to 1.5 meters long. The bracts are much shorter than the 5 to 10 millimeter long, finely downy flower stalks . The flowers are 37 to 40 millimeters long and stand together in twos or four. Their narrowly elliptical to elliptical, papillary tepals are 15 to 22 millimeters long and 3 to 60 millimeters wide. They are white on the outside, green on the inside. The stamens are 10 to 13 millimeters long. The triangular, cylindrical ovary has a length of about 20 millimeters. The abruptly enlarged stylus is 13 to 16 millimeters long.

The elongated triangular, leathery fruits reach a length of 5 to 7 centimeters and a width of 3 to 3.5 centimeters. Their inner surfaces are yellowish, the outer surface blackish.

Systematics and distribution

Furcraea macdougallii is common in the Mexican states of Puebla and Querétaro in tropical deciduous forests and thorn forests on limestone soils at an altitude of 800 to 1000 meters. According to R. Govaerts, it also occurs in the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas.

The first description by Eizi Matuda was published in 1955. Furcraea macdougallii is classified in the genus in the section Furcraea .
