Furaidis ( Arabic فريديس, DMG Furaidīs ; Hebrew פוריידיס; mutatis mutandis Little Garden of Eden or paradise ) is a town on the western flank of Mount Carmel in Haifa District in Israel .

General

Today's city, inhabited entirely by Arabs, was founded in 1880, survived the Israeli War of Independence largely unscathed and has had the status of a local association since 1952 . In 2018 the city had 13,085 inhabitants on an area of almost 2.7 km².

history

During excavations in a cave directly above Furaidis, finds from the Copper Age to the Middle Bronze Age were made by means of stratification , including cooking and fire pits, shards of vessels from utility and storage containers and burial sites.

The population of Furaidis rose from 1,400 in 1955 to 2,000 (1961), 3,400 (1972), 5,200 (1983), 7,700 (1995) and 10,000 (2005) to the current number of 13,085 (2018) citizens. The city thus shows a steady development until 2018.

Already during the British mandate there was a good relationship between Furaidis and the neighboring Jewish settlements like Zichron Ja'akow , the friendly attitude had a decisive influence on the fate of the Arab town during the independence war and beyond. This is also evident from the fact that the Arab city was raised to the status of a local association just three years after the end of the war.

Even in later times, Furaidis drew attention to himself with reconciling and connecting actions. The citizen Ibtisam Mahammed made herself known as a peace activist far beyond the borders of Israel. Mahammed received the Unsung Heroes of Compassion Prize for her many years of organizing women's discussion groups between Jewish and Arab women .

Education

With a university graduation rate of 75.85% in 2008, Furaidis is well above the national average (44.4%) and third in Israel, after Kochav Ja'ir and Schoham . Under the leadership of University Rector Husni Abu Dahasch, the quota could be increased by 40% within a few years. Abu Dahasch thus set a counterpoint to the otherwise familiar circumstance that many Arab cities such as the neighboring Jisr az-Zarqa are in the last places in the quota tables.
