Furnace - Flames of Hell (Original title: Furnace ) is an American horror - thriller from 2007 by director and screenwriter William Butler with Michael Paré in the lead role.
action
The police officer Michael Turner is supposed to lead the investigation into the death of the prison guard Joey Robbins, who drove home from Blackgate Prison, went into the bathroom without a word and shot himself there. The apparently obvious suicide puzzles Turner because Robbins' two fingers were missing from his left hand, traces of soot were found on his body, and there was no motive for suicide. Turner therefore goes to Blackgate Prison to investigate. The previous evening, inmate Bill Jamison apparently died of shock in his cell, but his face was also scalded with boiling water.
The next day, the prisoner Scags is found hanged in his cell. All of the dead were previously employed in the south wing, which is currently being renovated for additional prisoners. This part of the prison was sealed 50 years ago after the former prison director Ephrem White was murdered there and his daughter Lucille disappeared without a trace. At the time it was assumed that the prisoner Simon killed Director White in the cremation room in front of the incinerator and then started a fire to cover up the traces. From prison psychologist Dr. Ashley Carter learns from Turner that six inmates have died of a drug overdose in the past two months. Turner finds a chain with a cross and the remains of a little girl in the incinerator. When coroner Karen Bolding is supposed to examine the remains, she dies in a fire. Turner and Dr. Carter get closer and she learns that his wife and daughter were killed in revenge four years ago by a criminal he caught. The next morning they are haunted by the ghosts of Director White and his daughter Lucille, who takes the chain with the cross and then disappears again.
Turner and Dr. Carter look again for the south wing and find out what actually happened 50 years ago: When director Ephrem White sexually assaulted his daughter Lucille, she fell, bumped her head against a metal figure and lay motionless. The apparently dead Lucille then took White into the incineration room of the prison and asked Simon who was present to throw the body into the incinerator. There the girl woke up again and when Simon wanted to help her, he ran into White, who was caught in the flames himself. The prison guard Frank Miller, who still has an account with Turner, instigates a commotion among the prisoners and orders one of them to kill Turner. Turner gets away with a gunshot wound, but Miller also uses the commotion to randomly shoot prisoners. Meanwhile, the two inmates Terrence and Fury try to escape from the prison via the south wing, but when they reach the cremation room, they too are killed by the ghosts. The south wing of the prison is finally walled in again. During the credits you can still see that Frank Miller is now an inmate in prison and a ghostly hand reaches for him.
background
The name of the prison ( Blackgate Penitentiary ) is known from the comics of the DC Universe , two characters in the film also bear the name of well-known comic artists ( Frank Miller and Michael Turner ).
Reviews
“Serially produced horror film about a ghost girl who is looking for her killer. A genre product without its own signature and recognizable commitment. "
"Solid pastime for horror and thriller seekers."
