Gökçedam (formerly Hemite ) is a village in the central district of the Turkish province of Osmaniye . The place is on the Ceyhan River on the northeastern edge of the Çukurova plain, at the foot of the Dibek Dağları, about 20 km northwest of the provincial capital Osmaniye . Gökçedam had a population of 717 in 2014, and there is a primary school in town.

Hemite is the birthplace of the Turkish writer Yaşar Kemal .

The inhabitants live from agriculture. In the past, transhumance was the predominant form of management.

Worth seeing

In honor of Yaşar Kemal, a monument to Kemal's most famous fictional character İnce Memed has been erected on a promenade in the west of the town . There is a Hittite relief on a rock in the southeast of the town on the banks of the Ceyhan . On the eastern edge of Gökçedam is the small Armenian castle Amouda , now called Hemite Kalesi, on a rock cone .
