Gösta Gärdin (born  May 28, 1923 in Linköping ; †  December 12, 2015 there ) was a Swedish army officer and athlete who was active in the modern pentathlon .

Career

Gärdin, whose father was a colonel, joined the Swedish Army in 1944 and initially held the rank of Löjtnant .

1948 took part in the Olympic Games in London . In the overall classification , he finished third behind William Grut and George Moore , with which he secured the bronze medal. The following year he became world champion with the Swedish team.

In 1956 he was promoted to Kapten and in 1962 to major . Three years later he was promoted to Överstelöjtnant , and in 1969 to Överste . With this rank he also took over the management of the military academy in Karlberg, which he held until 1973. In 1976 the army promoted him to Överste 1st grade and appointed him inspector of the artillery, an office he held until his retirement in 1983.

Between 1965 and 1969 he was adjutant to King Gustav VI. Adolf and from 1969 chief adjutant. Between 1972 and 1996 he held various positions in the pentathlon division of the Swedish Military Sports Federation. In 1976 and 1980 he was head of the Swedish pentathlete delegation at the Olympic Games. In 1980 and 1981 he was on the board of the Conseil International du Sport Militaire and from 1984 to 1996 on the board of the Swedish Olympic Committee .

He was married from 1946.
